This bond shows the Richmond, VA George Washington Monument which is in Richmond, Virginia to this day. The statue of Washington is 21 feet tall and is cast with 18,000 pounds of bronze. There are six other Virginians on the monument. They are famous Virginians who took part in the Revolutionary War: Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, Andrew Lewis, John Marshall, George Mason and Thomas Nelson, Jr. This bond was authorized on February 17, 1864 and issued March 1, 1864 just months before Grant’s Wilderness Campaign and Sherman’s March to the Sea. The bond was printed by Evans Cogswell, Columbia, South Carolina and engraved by J. Archer of Richmond, VA. The signature of the Register on the bond is E. The coupons are signed by Robert Taylor. Robert Taylor was the son of Zachery Taylor, the 12th President of the United States from March 1849 until he died in office in July, 1850. The bond is number 3,567 of 9,300 issued. After the CSA was defeated, the British bond holders got together and formed a consortium to try to collect on their bonds. They were held jointly at a bank in London. The US ratified the 14th amendment of the US Constitution on July 9, 1868 denying the repayment of debt for rebellions and insurrections. This bond and others remained in a London bank vault until November 24, 1987, when the bank had Sotheby’s sell the bonds with the intent to distribute the proceeds to the relatives of the bondholders they could find. I had it archivally framed with a solid cherry wood frame. The overall dimensions of the framed bond are 32 1/2″ x 21 3/4″.
