Huntington-Chesapeake Ohio & Southwestern Railroad Stock Certificate. Started life as a peddler. Became involved with Leland Stanford, Charles Crocker, and Mark Hopkins (called “The Big Four”), also called the “Huntington Group”. They financed a survey for the transcontinental route and won control. The Central Pacific was completed to a junction with the Union Pacific in 1869. Further involvement in other railroads led to the Southern Pacific. In 1890 he displaced Stanford as President of the Southern Pacific. He developed the Chesapeake & Ohio. Vindictive and untruthful, he felt that railroads should never be burdened with obligations to the public. Gorgeous 1890 railroad stock signed as President. Superb signature barely affected by the cancellation. Some staining on the left side. Please look at photo’s for condition.
