One at center of an Indian on horseback about to shoot a buffalo with his bow and arrow; a milkmaid at lower right holding a wooden bucket; an allegorical woman at left holding a shield with Mercurys head on it, and a Mercury-style staff in her other hand; part of the California state shield with a seated allegorical figure holding a spear, a bear leaping alongside, and miners in the background, with Eureka printed above. Black border, crème paper. 6 ½ x 10. Creases, splits and a bit of foxing as seen. Top right corner tip is missing. Paper is somewhat brittle from age. Some age discoloration but very good overall considering its age. Hoit may be a relative to M. Hoit, who ran for mayor of Nevada City in 1851. Nevada City Mining District. In 2011, Certificate #25 for 100 shares, also issued Sept. Condition was almost identical to this certificate right down to the missing corner.
