For sale is an incredible archive of deeds from the 1917 bankruptcy of the The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway Company. Archive consists of 14 of at least 18 deeds, which essentially transfer all of the company assets from the bankruptcy receiver for the company, Jacob M. Dickinson, back to the company. Or, in the elegant legal terminology of the deeds, do hereby remise, release, quit-claim, assign, set over, transfer and deliver to The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway Company each and all of the railroads, franchises, leaseholds, trackage rights, real estate, moneys, securities, accounts, choses in action, books of account, records, files, documents, stock standing in my name as Receiver of said Railway Company and all other property of every name and nature, whatsoever and wherever situated, now in my possession or under my control as such Receiver. In witness whereof, I have executed these presents as such Receiver pursuant to the decree above mentioned, this 25th day of June, 1917. As I understand it, the receiver Jacob M. These are all stamped “Original”, and hence appear to be the actual documents used in the transferal of ownership. Each deed is 16 pages long, signed by the receiver Dickinson a prominent railroad and political figure who, among other things, served as US Secretary of War from 1909 to 1911, and contains many stamps from local counties which acknowledge the deeds. There are deeds for the company’s assets in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska & Kansas, Colorado, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico and Oklahoma, Tennessee & Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma. As you can see, there are a few overlapping states, and my guess is that second deeds had to be made to accommodate all of the counties who had to approve them. An incredible, estate fresh find!
