Declaration of Independence, formally the unanimous declaration of the thirteen United States of America, is the declaration and founding document adopted by the Second Continental Congress at the Pennsylvania State House in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 4, 1776. The Revolution explains why the Thirteen colonies at war with the Kingdom of Great Britain considered themselves thirteen independent sovereign states no longer subject to British colonial rule. With the declaration, these new states took a common first step towards the formation of the United States of America and de facto formalized the American War of Independence, which had been going on since April 1775. The Declaration of Independence was signed by 56 of America’s Founding Fathers, Congressmen from New Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. The declaration became one of the most widely circulated and most frequently reprinted documents in early American history. The Lee resolution for independence was passed unanimously by Congress on July 2nd. The Committee of Five had drafted the declaration to be ready when Congress voted on independence. John Adams, a leading pro-independence advocate, had persuaded the committee to select Thomas Jefferson to write the original draft of the document, which was edited by Congress.
