Railroad stock certificate (just over 8 by 10) for the Alabama and Tennessee River Rail Road Company of Selma, Alabama, printed by F. Mayer of New York, dated March 18, 1867. The certificate has a great illustration of an early locomotive with passenger cars at top center. The form apparently was printed for the railroad in the 1850s, judging by the crossed over date at the bottom (185_ made into 1867). This stock certificate is numbered 1796 and is for 13 shares issued to Edward H. Caldwell of Mobile, Alabama. At the time of the Civil War, this railroad line (incorporated in 1848) ran from Selma to Blue Mountain, Alabama, and then to Dalton, Georgia. In 1866, former Confederate General Joseph E. He would remain in that position for only a little more than a year. This stock certificate is signed by Joseph E. Johnston, President, as well as H. After being consolidated with a couple of other railroads, this line came to be known as the Selma, Rome and Dalton Rail Road. The consolidation took place during the tenure of Joe Johnston as President, oddly enough previous to the date on this document. I cant find any other examples of this stock certificate with Joseph E. The stock certificate is in only fair to good condition with light wear and soiling. Note the several light folds or creases with some tearing at their edges and a few tears or holes where the folds meet in the center, as well as some foxing at the horizontal center fold (more noticeable on the reverse). There’s a note in pencil on the reverse. This is the second of two stock certificates from this railroad that I had from this collection.
