Antique Stock Certificate – Amazonia Colonization & Commercial Co. San Francisco, California, February 5th, 1869. Piper (of San Francisco, CA). Measures 10 3/4 ” x 7″. The company was a colonization scheme led by Mr. Piper of San Francisco, who was supposedly granted land and use of the Amazon River by the governments of Peru and Brazil. An expedition was undertaken though I couldn’t find much detail regarding the specifics of it, other than one man, a Mr. Carr son of Mrs. Carr, nearly roped famed naturalist John Muir into traveling with them. Carr’s son would eventually return to the States in very poor health, so I’m guessing it didn’t work out as planned to say the least.
