Powell as President (Unverified Authenticity). Excerpt from Wake Forest Gazette article. /The following is based on a thesis written by Don P. In partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of bachelor of arts in the School of Public and International Affairs of Princeton University, Class of 1939. Was the son of the president of the Royall and Royal Mill – named changed in 1933 – before and during the Depression. He dedicated the thesis affectionately to his family, which included his mother, Petrona Georgia Powell Johnston, and father, Don P. Johnston, along with her three sisters, and said they were the daughters and admiring friend of W. It was the fall of 1899 when William C. Powell of Savannah, Georgia, and Robert E. Royall of Wake Forest, brothers-in-law and both Wake Forest College graduates, formally applied to the State of North Carolina to organize a firm called the Royall Cotton Mills. The duration of the Corporation shall be 30 years. At the stockholders’ meeting on Oct. 31, 1899, Powell was elected president and a director along with Royall, two Wake Forest residents, John B. Carlyle and Thomas E. Holding, and a businessman from Savannah, B. Holding and Powell were brothers-in-law, and Powell was elected secretary. Royall became the treasurer and vice-president.
