For sale is an original 1796 certificate which states that Charles Lee is “entitled to One Share of Augmented Stock in the Bank of Alexandria, transferable at the said bank Charles Lee or his attorney”. Certificate is signed by the President of the bank, William Herbert. Washington himself belonged to and borrowed from this bank. Washington was also good friends with Lee, and while president, appointed him Attorney-General, a position he served in from 1795 to 1801 when John Adams kept him on in the position. He also served as an interim Secretary of State in 1800, was an early advocate of returning the southern part of Washington DC to Virginia (which happened after his death) and a prominent Virginian and Washington D.
