It is a lithograph which contains a picture of Jefferson Davis in the upper left corner, the city of Richmond, Virginia depicted in the upper right, and Liberty reclining with a cornucopia. The document has an ornate border consisting of several thing parallel curvy lines. Along the left side of the page, it says One Thousand Dollars. The upper left corner has two places where the handwritten serial number, no. Has been filled in, both above and below a small image of a steam paddle wheel boat. The center of the page has small letters on a banner that says, Eight per center July 1st, 1868. ” The title of the documents reads in bold letters that curve upward, “The Confederate States of American Loan. Authorized by the act of Congress. The text belows reads. On the 1st day of July 1868, the Confederate States of America, will pay to the Bearer of this Bond at the Seat of Government, or at such place of deposit as may be appointed by the Secretary of the Treasury, the sum of ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS, with interest thereon from date at the rate of Eight per Cent per annum payable semi annually on the surrender of the annexed Coupons. In witness whereof, the Register of the Treasury in pursuance of said act of congress hath hereunto set his hand and affixed the seal of the Treasury at Richmond, this 2nd day of March 1863. There are signature lines with the titles “Entered, ” “Recorded, ” and “Register of the Treasury” all initialed or signed. “Entered” is initialed by. Adams The coupons are signed by a Name that I cannot identify. The provenance of this bond is as follows. A hand written note, from my father, was attached to the back of the frame which held this bond. The note stated this was given to my uncle in 1971 by my great grandmother. My great grandmother lived from 11/10/1854 -4/10/1939. Please see attached high resolution Photo for depiction of condition. There are no folds except the horizontal edges which were folded approximately 1/2 inch, to fit in the frame. The top edge is folded 1 3/4, again to fit the frame. Since the provenance is established by my father’s hand written note, my presumption is that qualifies this as uncirculated. Collectors, please correct me if this is incorrect.
