Original 1873 “Mineral Certificate” made during the Ulysses S. Grant presidency, and signed on his behalf, as most such documents were, by a secretary. The new mining law of 1872 shown here in effect, giving rights to an area in El Dorado County, California, in the Gold Hill mining district, to a Mr. It is still known today as the Michael Sweeney Mine. There was a Michael Sweeney in the “Fairweather Party”, or “Discovery Men”, who found the largest gold deposit in Montana Territory in 1863. I spoke with the the author of “The Discovery Men”, Gary R. Forney, and although Mr. Sweeney’s movements after 1863 are difficult to know, he is thought to have gone back to Canada sometime after the strike. An odd association of this document with the original Sweeney of the Discovery Men, is the confusion historically in Mr. He is said to have gone by both James, and Michael, Sweeney. This claim was originally recorded in 1873 by Michael Sweeney, and again in 1877 by a James Sweeney… But I cannot claim for certain that this Michael/James Sweeney was the same Michael/James Sweeney of 1863, though it is possible, given the use of both names in each case. What are the odds? Measures 10″ x 16″. Three sheets, plus a plain cover sheet… Which has both Michael, and James, Sweeney, shown as having recorded the claim (see close-up). Eastern state land grants from President Grant are fairly common, not so Mineral Certificates from the western states. The item “1873 California Gold Mine Claim Ulysses S. Grant El Dorado Co.
