The following information came from a column in the Post Journal in Jamestown by the Fenton History Center concerning a group of papers related to Allen Fireworks, Inc. Most of the papers are handwritten and seem to be the rough drafts of correspondence and the Certificate of Incorporation. According to the rough draft of the incorporation papers, dated March 1921, the five directors of the company were to be Clare B. Allen, Fred Chindgren, Floyd G. Johnson and Allen E. All were of full age and had an address of Jamestown. According to the city directories for 1920 and 1922, no Clare B. Allen is listed, in 1922 Fred Chindgren was a clerk at Art Metal Construction Company, in 1920 Floyd G. Bushey was an interior decorator at 104 E. In 1920 Irene I. Johnson was a stenographer for the Petroleum Prospecting Company and in 1922 was a stenographer for Van Vlack and Barger, attorneys, Allen E. Barger was an attorney at Van Vlack and Barger and in 1922 was also a city court judge in Jamestown. Interestingly, the handwritten incorporation papers were written on the back of letterhead from the Ira Lou Spring Post No. 165 of the American Legion. Listed as the quartermaster of the Post was Floyd G. Bushey, while Fred A. Chindgren and Allen E. Barger were on the staff. The purpose was 1. To plan, design, construct, alter, repair, remove or otherwise engage in any work, business, construction or manufacture of fireworks and to make, execute and take or receive any contracts therefore or relating thereto or connected therewith. ” It continues for a couple of more pages in the same way allowing them to deal in explosives, manage or produce “amusements and attractions… Including fireworks, musical performances and other intellectual and instructive entertainments. Other possibilities were included in later clauses. The main location would be Jamestown, but they were to be allowed to operate in other states following the local laws. From some of the telegrams and letters, handwritten and typed, they solicited business from other American Legion Posts and conventions in the east. There was one order for fireworks from Conti Fireworks Company in New Castle, Pa. Another letter was from the International Fireworks Company of Jersey City, N. Giving prices for fireworks and information about supplying an expert to fire same if needed. A cover letter copy is included that was sent with a contract to Hugh Wilson Patterson, Editor of the Furniture Index, in Jamestown in June 1921, but no mention of what it was for is included. Hugh Patterson was also the secretary of the Jamestown Furniture Market Association in 1922, so it may have been in connection with an upcoming Furniture Mart showing. The handwritten message on a Telegram form was to go to American Legion in Nashville, Tenn. It states that (the Allen Fireworks Company) would furnish complete program, Over the Top We Go, all fireworks, explosives, necessary scenery and get out program for same, novelty advertising on streets and rehearse personnel of pageant – you furnish show grounds, music, newspaper publicity – ex-servicemen in uniform, electrical connection for floodlights, committees for advance sale of tickets. Our representatives will be in Nashville two weeks in advance to assist in direction of fund campaign. Your favorable reply wired our expense will bring our representatives at once. Wonder if they did get the contract to produce the show. The Allen Fireworks Company Inc. Is not listed in the 1922 city directory, so it may have gone out of business shortly after it started.
